Jesus said to his disciples:
“Do not be afraid any longer, little flock,
for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.
Sell your belongings and give alms.
Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out,
an inexhaustible treasure in heaven
that no thief can reach nor moth destroy.
For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.

“Gird your loins and light your lamps
and be like servants who await their master’s return from a wedding,
ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks.
Blessed are those servants
whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival.
Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself,
have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them.
And should he come in the second or third watch
and find them prepared in this way,
blessed are those servants.
Be sure of this:
if the master of the house had known the hour
when the thief was coming,
he would not have let his house be broken into.
You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect,
the Son of Man will come.”

Then Peter said,
“Lord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone?”
And the Lord replied,
“Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward
whom the master will put in charge of his servants
to distribute the food allowance at the proper time?
Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds doing so.
Truly, I say to you, the master will put the servant
in charge of all his property.
But if that servant says to himself,
‘My master is delayed in coming,’
and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants,
to eat and drink and get drunk,
then that servant’s master will come
on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour
and will punish the servant severely
and assign him a place with the unfaithful.
That servant who knew his master’s will
but did not make preparations nor act in accord with his will
shall be beaten severely;
and the servant who was ignorant of his master’s will
but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating
shall be beaten only lightly.
Much will be required of the person entrusted with much,

In today’s Gospel, we are given a warning: Be always prepared for the time when we are called by God for eternal life. Keep alive the Flame of Faith. How will we do this? 

Here is the secret to living our Catholic Faith. You must see to it that the here and now is the time in which God wants us to serve Him and to meet Him. It is not in the past — the past is over. It is not in a future that we have only imagined. For the person who lives in the grace of God living the Catholic Faith happens right now. And when she or he  washes the car or washes the dishes because that is what is now needed to be done, he or she is living the true Faith and prepared to meet Christ. You must of course be in His Grace. 

One day a very young priest made a special effort to meet Mother Teresa of Calcutta who served the poor that were dying on the streets of Calcutta, India.  The priest asked  Mother Theresa to pray for him to have clarity in his life every day.  He wanted clarity but she said to him, “No, I will not pray for clarity!”  Often, she explained, she lived many days without clarity. She discovered that what was needed was not clarity but absolute trust in God. We all need to have absolute trust in God each day.

If we are lax in fulfilling our daily tasks or we do not take care to know what is morally right and live it, then the thief described in today’s Gospel will find an easy entrance into our heart and not only steal the real treasure of living in the Grace of God but instead leaves behind a life in shambles.

God, in all Grace, will surely call each of us for eternal life; therefore, right here, right now — and in absolute trust in God alone — be prepared.

It has long been a Catholic understanding that when circumstances prevent one from receiving Holy Communion, it is possible to make an Act of Spiritual Communion, which is a source of grace. Spiritual Communion is an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament and lovingly embrace him at a time or in circumstances when one cannot receive Him in sacramental Communion. The most common reason for making an Act of Spiritual Communion is when a person cannot attend Mass. Acts of Spiritual Communion increase our desire to receive sacramental Communion and help us avoid the sins that would make us unable to receive Holy Communion worthily.

Spiritual Communion Prayer

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love you above all things and I desire to receive you in my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,

Come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace you as if you were already there

And unite myself wholly to you.

Never permit me to be separated from you.

Amen.
